The most beautiful giant dahlias + care tips

Have you ever heard of the XXL Dahlia or Giant Dahlia? This special variety is officially called "Dinnerplate Dahlias" and is known for its gigantic flowers. They are often used as focal points in gardens and flower beds. Especially the varieties Café au Lait and Fleurel are very popular. Dive into the world of Dinnerplate Dahlias and get tips on planting and caring for these beautiful flowers.

The Unique Qualities of Dinnerplate Dahlias

Dinnerplate Dahlias are particularly popular because of the unusual size of their flowers. They can reach a diameter of up to 30 cm, which is significantly larger than most other Dahlia varieties. Due to their impressive appearance, they are often called Giant Dahlias. In addition to their striking look, these varieties are also characterized by a wide range of colours, so there’s something for everyone.

Planting Tips for Dinnerplate Dahlias

Dahlias are tropical plants and prefer a sunny spot with at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. Choose a well-drained spot in the garden, as waterlogging can damage the roots of the dahlia tubers. The soil should also be loose and nutrient-rich. The best time to plant Dinnerplate Dahlias is in the spring after the Ice Saints, once there is no more risk of frost. You can also pre-sprout giant dahlias indoors in pots to give them a head start on blooming.

Support the Large Flowers

One challenge when growing Dinnerplate Dahlias is supporting the oversized flowers. Due to their weight, the flowers tend to droop from the main stem or even break off. To prevent this, you can surround the dahlias with stakes or special dahlia supports. Attach the supports right after planting the dahlias to avoid damaging the roots once the plants have grown. Insert the stakes about 10-15 cm deep into the soil, close to the stem of the young plants. Gently tie garden twine or soft string around the stakes and bind them around the plant stems to provide extra support. Make sure not to tie the supports too tightly to avoid damaging the stems.

Care and Planting Tips for Dahlias in One Overview

To keep your XXL Dahlias healthy and vibrant for as long as possible, follow these care tips:

  • Location: Dinnerplate Dahlias prefer sunny spots with nutrient-rich soil. Choose a place where they receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight.
  • Planting Depth: Plant the dahlia tubers about 10-15 cm deep. Water thoroughly after planting to keep the soil moist around the tubers.
  • Spacing: Plant the tubers about 45-60 cm apart, as Dinnerplate Dahlias grow quite large. They usually reach a height of at least 1 meter and grow quite broad.Watering: Ensure the dahlias get enough water, especially during the warm summer months. Water regularly, about 2-3 times per week, but avoid waterlogging.
  • Fertilizing: Fertilize your Dinnerplate Dahlias regularly with an appropriate flower fertilizer to promote growth and blooming.
  • Support: Due to their size and heavy flower heads, Dinnerplate Dahlias tend to bend over. Use stakes or special plant supports to help them.Deadheading: Be sure to remove spent flowers to encourage new blooms until frost arrives.
  • Wintering: In regions with cold winters, dahlia tubers should be dug up in the fall and stored frost-free in sand. Store them in a dry and cool place. No extra ventilation is required, as drafts can harm the tubers.
